I've visited a couple different Churches lately with family and noticed that a certain issue still annoys me.
Almost immediately after I became a believer my husband was saved too. We decided that we should start trying to conceive. Our prayers went something like, "God, may we quickly conceive a health baby." I'm glad that the Lord didn't answer our prayer in the way we had initially hoped.
I think I'll start with why I'm annoyed with pastors in general. The first church that I attended after becoming a believer was doing a series on "The Family" when I walked in on the scene. What did they mean by family.....kids. How to raise 'em, how to keep 'em off drugs, how to get 'em to have the right kinds of friends, how to get them to get 'em to do well in school.
Please keep in mind that I have just been saved from a horrid life of sin. All that I wanted to hear about was the glories of CHRIST and His gospel and I didn't even have any kids so how does this apply to me and my life. But being new to all this and really enjoying and eating up the scriptures I went along with it, not giving much thought to whether or not what they were teaching was even biblical. It seemed Christian enough they used scripture a lot.
After months went by I was getting weary of this child centric churchianity, but maybe I was just bitter because I couldn't conceive a child. Then the months turned in to years and thankfully we found a church with a pastor that was dedicated to preaching the Word of God and the glories of Christ. AHHH, at last my soul was being fed! Now if I felt uncomfortable with the sermon it was because of my sin and not because I was childless. Although, the burden of being childless hung over me like a pendent rock, on Sunday I longed to be raptured in the beauty of God and His gospel.
Still to this day I see that in most churches it's all about family, about being healthy, and well balanced. I don't think Christ died for me so that I can have my best life now, with perfect kids, an amazing marriage, and a cute behind. Maybe the Lord has given you a rebellious child or an unhappy marriage, or a very broken body. Wouldn't these be trials? Aren't Christians supposed to go through many difficult trials during our life? James 1:2 and Peter 1:6 just to name a couple of verses.
It seems very idolatrous, to me, to put the family up on such a pedestal. Is it wrong to bring these things up in a sermon once in a while, no. But preach Christ, not how to have a healthy perfect marriage with nice kids that never get in to trouble. Seek the kingdom first, look to Christ for your joy He died for you. If I had to look to my family for happiness and fulfilment I would be depressed, if I look to Christ I'm lifted up and I'm able to serve Him.
Also during the 4 years of being a believer and the whole time being unable to have any children, I only really had enjoyable fellowship with a few women. Most women are just absolutely consumed with being moms. How can I fellowship with someone who all that they want to talk about is schooling and running around with the kids? I have nothing to say to that, I wanted to mainly talk about Christ. I got the sense that many Christians think that the gospel is something that you need but then once you have it you move on to the deeper things in life. Like how to have awesome kids with good self-esteem, and that I would understand that some day.
Come on ladies lets learn about Christ and study His word and learn to apply it to our lives. I'm amazed that when I read the scriptures how well many women mentioned in the O.T. and the N. T. knew the Word of God. Now when you're really busy with little ones there is no way you will be able to devote hours of study to the bible. But every little bit stored up in our hearts is so endlessly important.
However some women, even though they had many children, were a source of wonderful fellowship, encouragement, and prayer during this time. They loved their family and served them but they loved Christ much more. I'm so grateful to God for them.
